As part of its latest earnings report, Activision confirmed the inevitable Call of Duty sequel that's due out this year. But what came as a surprise is news that this year's game will return to the franchise's "roots," and now we have some idea of why.

Speaking as part of a conference call with investors, chief operating officer Thomas Tippl first discussed 2016's Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. While he described it as "a high-quality, innovative game," he revealed it "underperformed [Activision's] expectations." We already knew sales were down significantly compared with the previous year's Black Ops III. That was due in part to Infinite Warfare being a new sub-series, making for a difficult comparison with the established Black Ops.

However, the futuristic setting has also been a source of complaints from some longtime Call of Duty fans, a fact that Tippl acknowledged. That doesn't mean the company necessarily regrets exploring that space.

"t's clear that, for a portion of our audience, the space setting just didn't resonate," he explained. "We have a passionate, experienced studio deeply committed to this direction, and despite the risks we saw, we believe it is important to consider the passions of our game teams in deciding what content to create.

"While it wasn't the success we planned, it allows us to protect the core tenets of our culture that Bobby discussed: empowering our talented teams to have the chance to pursue opportunities that they are passionate about. Providing an environment that recognizes passion is a critical component of our success, and a process to learn from our mistakes is what makes our company special, and it's why the most talented people in our industry are attracted to our company."

All of that said, even with Call of Duty still doing well, Activision is clearly aware of the demand for a Call of Duty game that hews closer to the series' older titles.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare
"In 2017, Activision will take Call of Duty back to its roots and traditional combat will once again take center stage," Tippl said. "This is what our dedicated community of Call of Duty players and Sledgehammer Games, which has been developing this year's title, are the most excited about."

Beyond that, no further details were shared. It stands to reason that this year's game--which was greenlit more than two years ago--will feature a classic or modern-day setting, but that remains to be seen. For its part, Sledgehammer said of the game on Twitter, "It's our biggest achievement as game makers."

Sledgehammer previously assisted with the development of Modern Warfare 3 and served as the lead developer of Advanced Warfare. Activision rotates between three main studios--Infinity Ward, Treyarch, and Sledgehammer--for its annual Call of Duty releases. Sledgehammer was, at one point, at work on a third-person Call of Duty game set during Vietnam.
We gleaned last weak from a job listing for Call of Duty studio Sledgehammer Games that the franchise’s annual release for 2017 will be looking to focus on moment-to-moment gameplay, and there has been some other interesting news for the as-of-yet unannounced game as well. Now, we have another job listing posted on Activision’s website for Sledgehammer that hints at the level of visual fidelity they are looking to achieve with Call of Duty 2017.

As per the job listing, the studio is looking for someone who is “dedicated to high production values” and can “create realistic next gen textures and materials for use on architecture and terrain.” One of the duties and responsibilities mentioned is also to “model and texture realistic, modular, hard-surface and organic set pieces and props for a diverse set of environments.”

This seems to be pretty regular stuff, to be honest, but it’s good to see that the game will look to take advantage of the next-gen hardware the developers have at their disposal. As of yet, we may not even know what the next Call of Duty title will be, but at least it’s good to know that it will probably look good.

‘Tis the Season is all about giving, and we have some seriously awesome gifts heading your way. We hope that you’ve been good this year, because you won’t want to miss out on these items. Here’s a look at just some of what we have in store for Call of Duty players this month:

Epic Prototype Hailstorm – Thunder Pistol Bonus*

Call of Duty is honored to have some of the most loyal fans in gaming, and to show our gratitude we’re handing out a very cool weapon to players who have clocked time in both Call of Duty: Black Ops III and Call of Duty Infinite Warfare.

Starting today, all players who own Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and who also play Call of Duty: Black Ops III will receive an epic prototype Hailstorm – Thunder pistol. It’s just our way of saying thank you, and to reward you for your loyalty.

The Hailstorm – Thunder is extremely shiny (and deadly), and features a three-round burst along with two perks: Whirlwind, which is a fast cycling auto burst that increases recoil, and Focus to reduce idle sway while aiming down sights. So, jump in the game today and equip it in your loadout to show some pride.

Modern Warfare Remastered Maps and Modes

When Modern Warfare Remastered launched last month, it included ten remastered maps from the original game. On December 13, players who own Modern Warfare Remastered will receive the remaining six remastered maps: Bloc, Countdown, Pipeline, Showdown, Strike, and Wet Work, along with the Hardpoint and Gun Game modes being made available in Modern Warfare Remastered for the first time.

Plus, we’re throwing in an additional chilly bonus as all Modern Warfare Remastered players will also get the remastered Winter Crash map in all its glory! We’ll be running a 24/7 Winter Crash playlist beginning on December 20 that will last through the holidays, and we’ll have more details soon.

Genesis Holiday Map

The holiday map makeover fever is spreading to Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare as well! Later this month, players will find a Genesis Holiday map waiting for them as the Headquarters for the Division of Mechanical Evolution gets a festive new look. Plus there will be a 24/7 Genesis Holiday playlist, ready to spread cheer, goodwill, and high KDRs.

12 Days of Winter

As it turns out, the Hailstorm – Thunder pistol, Modern Warfare Remastered maps and modes, and Genesis Holiday map are just the top of the present pile! Starting on December 21 and running through January 1, we will be offering some extremely cool gifts every day to Infinite Warfare players who log into the game.

These freebies range from big Salvage and Key bonuses, to winter-themed personalization items, and even winter-themed Common, Rare, and Legendary prototypes! Twelve Days, twelve awesome gifts for free, just for logging into the game. Just remember to log in every day from December 21 through January 1 to get that day’s bonus.

But wait, there’s even more! We’ll have even more announcements coming up, along with additional special bonuses heading your way throughout #TisTheSeason including some Double XP events and more, so stay frosty!

We caught up with former Treyarch Community Manager Josh Olin – more commonly known as “JD_2020” within the Call of Duty Community. (You might remember the #BlameJD hashtag and so on – it’s common for a CM of any franchise to receive an element of blame).

Josh Olin became the Community Manager for Treyarch during the launch year of World At War back in 2008, and continued his role into the release of Black Ops in 2010 before then moving on to other projects outside of the franchise.

As someone who was involved in the franchise during it’s peak growth period, we thought we’d get a different perspective on the direction of Call of Duty to this day from Josh in the form of an interview.

Below is Part 1. Part 2 will be added tomorrow which is where things get even more interesting, where we discuss Call of Duty 2017 and beyond.

One of the less talked-about aspects of Infinite Warfare, Zombies in Spaceland, gets a new livestream.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare comes with co-op Zombies mod, a first for developer Infinity Ward. It’s called Zombies in Spaceland and it starts four heroes who get transformed into a zombie-filled nightmare as characters they were auditioning for.

The mode represents Infinity Ward’s take on very popular Zombies mode, and the studio hosted a livestream yesterday to show it off one more time. The show kicked off with the opening cut-scene you’ll be watching in the game, explaining the backstory.

The rest of the stream, which you can see an archive of above via GamersPrey HD, goes on to show gameplay for about 20 minutes. The developers talk about the ATM system, which allows you to bank your earnings so you don’t lose them after death.

The afterlife feature is also discussed, and Infinity Ward says the goal was to make it entertaining so you’re not just spectating other players. There’s more details in there about traps, and some of the enemy types you’ll be facing.

Infinite Warfare is out November 4 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

In a new Reddit post, Infinity Ward has revealed some of the changes they are bringing to Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare at launch based upon the feedback from the beta.

WEAPONS:

  • Shotguns:
    • Increased the consistency of shotgun damage
    • Shotgun damage at longer range has been increased
    • Slightly increased the one shot kill range.
    • Both the Reaver and Banshee have received a slight bonus to their 1 trigger pull kill range
  • Snipers
    • Bullet spread at the hip no longer gets smaller as the player ADS’s. Once the scope reaches the player’s eye, the bullet spread goes instantly to zero.
    • Sniper aim assist was reduced slightly for the KBS Longbow and the other bolt action snipers. Our turn rate while Aimed Down Sights is still slowed to help with precision aiming.
    • Sniper-class weapons no longer have any Aim Assist until the optic fully reaches the player’s eye.
    • For the ELO and Scout optics on snipers, the idle sway while ADS has been increased along with the player’s view bounce when moving. Because these optics are less zoomed in, the view bounce and the sway are felt less. These changes are to promote more stationary aiming and firing with these optics.
    • The Tracking Chip optic’s visuals have been improved
    • Reduced bonus of the Quickdraw attachment on snipers
    • Updated snipers to have more flinch when getting shot.
  • Launchers
    • The Howitzer Grenade launcher can now be fired from the hip instead of requiring full ADS
  • SMGs*
    • The RPR Evo epic variant (Ripper) has had a tuning pass to increase recoil given its bonus fire rate

PERKS & RIG TRAITS:

  • Marksman – We fixed a bug where, in addition to reducing flinch, it was also reducing recoil. This would then stack with Gun Perks and the Foregrip Attachment. This bonus reduction has been removed.
  • Momentum – Fixed issues with speed not being retained
  • Marked Target – The temporary red marker on the victim has been toned down

HEALTH REGEN AND SPAWNING:

  • Health Regen time has been reduced
  • Infusion bonus reduced
  • Continuing to refine spawn system on beta maps, will assess remaining launch maps in live environment

ECONOMY:

  • Increased salvage gain in mission teams.
  • Changed currency value in supply drops.
  • Increased drop rate of keys in round-based modes.

SCORESTREAKS AND RIGS:

  • AP-3X – Increased health, bullet damage, and weapon accuracy up close to help with target acquisition
  • RC-8 – Increased health, increased weapon accuracy to help with target acquisition, slight increase in fire rate, and slight damage increase on splash damage
  • T.H.O.R –
    • Increased speed of tracking rockets
    • Increase damage of both tracking and straight fire rockets
  • Bombardment:
    • Slight decrease in both time to the initial drop and the time between each subsequent drop
    • Updated area damage to be consistent inner to outer
  • Rigs:
    • Refining payload balance
    • Slight tweaks to gameplay balance across rigs

MODES:

  • Defender: When carrying the Drone, the score-per-second bonus has been bumped from 5 score per second to 10 score per second. Scorestreak carrier bonus is unaffected.
  • Gun Game: Now features all classic weapons. In future updates, weapons with alternate functions will retain their state upon spawn.
  • Domination: When you step off a flag, the current capture bar progress starts to decay. The rate of this decay has been halved from the Beta. This allows players to hop off a flag to defend it and then get back on the flag with less progress loss

MATCHMAKING:

  • Potential player evaluation was too strict. We were doing some very thorough testing of your connection to other players before placing you in a lobby with those players. This turned out to be a bit too thorough, and eventually was relaxed, leading to shorter matching times.
  • Incorrect geographic categorization. There was an issue in our geolocation system which was causing some players to be incorrectly categorized. This was also resolved during the beta, improving matchmaking times.
  • Dead lobby cleanup. The process which cleans up unused or dead lobby information from our back end was taking too long. This was causing a number of slowdowns when searching for a match.
  • The matchmaker was always quite good at generating new lobbies, but one thing we noticed was that queueing into a join in progress situation was taking much longer. This was due to some issues in the way we track information about the lobbies that are currently playing a match. These issues were also addressed during the beta, and sped up the join in progress case immensely.

TTK (TIME TO KILL / ENGAGEMENT):

  • We know a lot of you had different experiences with TTK during the Beta. With the above adjustments to dedicated servers, matchmaking, and weapon tuning, we think you’ll find that the TTK will be more balanced at launch, both on the attacking and receiving end. We’ll continue to monitor and balance throughout the year as need and would love your feedback in the process.
  • We’re always looking at TTK and will continue to balance and monitor

DEDICATED SERVERS:

  • One of the major infrastructure changes we made this project was how dedicated server allocations work. We’re using a new load balancing system on the servers themselves, as well as pretty heavily changed how the game chooses a datacenter to use, and requests a dedicated server from that datacenter.
  • At the start of the Beta, you may have noticed some host migrations and some poorer quality matches. We discovered some issues where the new system was dropping our dedicated server utilization numbers way below target. After some tweaks and fixes we were able dramatically improve our dedicated server utilization for the second weekend and beyond.

VMoserP is one of the first people to get the Tactical Nuke, the 25 Streak, in Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare beta.

In order to get the tactical nuke streak, which is called the De-Atomizer Strike in Infinite Warfare, players must use variants of certain weapons that have the ‘Nuclear’ perk with it. We detailed the weapons with that in our post here.

VMoserP was kind enough to share his gameplay with his of the nuke streak, which you can watch fully below. Be sure to follow him on Twitter!
