Bioware’s Casey Hudson has confirmed that, contrary to appearances, Anthem is not an MMO.

Talking during EA’s “deep dive” Hudson stressed that the title isn’t an MMO, saying it’s “not an MMO, not a multiplayer game with story bolted on the side.” It’s something “new and different.”

Executive producer, Mark Durrah, explained that in many multiplayer games, the story driven experience can get “diluted” within shared worlds.

“You can build a solution to that, but you have to really build it into the core of the game. That’s what we’ve tried to do with Anthem. It’s what we call ‘our world, my story’.”

The shared world of multiplayer is outside of the hub, while the player base that they return to after their missions is where the single-player experience lives.

“By doing it this way, we’re able to combine that impact and agency of a single-player story with the fun of teaming up with your friends to play co-op in combat.”

    Sounds very Monster Hunter: World-esque.

Lead writer, Cathleen Rootsaert, said the game has been designed so that the devs can “add story for years to come,” saying the content could range from a new “moment” with a character, a world event, or a new storyline and plot.

On the topic of microtransactions, Bioware confirmed that there will be cosmetics and vanity items, but there won’t be any loot boxes. Players will be able to see what they’re going to buy before they drop their cash on items, and there’s no pay-to-win with in-game purchases.

Anthem’s launch date was also confirmed as February 22, 2019 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
