The popularity of social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Classmates.com more than quadrupled from 2005 to 2009. These sites allow users to develop profiles of their backgrounds and interests, communicate with friends and strangers, and share thoughts, photos, Internet links, music, and more. Many users say the sites are good for our society, but others contend that the dangers of social media outweigh the benefits.

Proponents of social networking sites argue that these online communities promote increased communication with friends and family, familiarize people with valuable computer skills, and allow contact with people from around the world.

Opponents argue that social networking sites expose children to predators, increase vulnerability to computer viruses, lower worker productivity, and promote narcissism and short attention spans.

I for one can vouge for the lower work productivity. However, do social networking sites really have that much of an impact on our daily lives? Your opinion?

They have no impact on my life, but this forum makes me lazy. You can be whoever you wanna be on these things. I'm really morbidly obese and covered in bed sores, too fat to move and hand fed by nurses. I do love those bed baths though.

On a serious note. I am not part of any social site apart from this one and 99% of the time I'm in work while on here. I need not post my picture or update my every move because I'm not obliged to. The one thing about this forum is I could be anybody, a really nice guy or someone with internet privelages in prison serving 35 years for a triple murder, who knows huh?

I don't see anything wrong with social sites, what does annoy me though is the 'you gotta get on Facebook' advice and the news that something was 'all over Facebook'. A friend of mine spends almost his entire free time on FB and i just don't see the point. There has to be some form of compulsion to these sites as they are so popular, but i treat them like Skyrim, I don't wanna get sucked in so i avoid them, I'm happy with the traditional forms of socialising.

What i have noticed though is that cliques form in workplaces as a result of these. I will always be a loner in that sense, something i hate is inner circles. I'm happy being alone.

like most other things, purpose and impacts are determined on the fly...some use it productively, others not so much. is it detrimental? i dunno...to me the issues that are coming from social networking existed long before facebook was around...in essence thes sites might be creating new ways for the problems to manfiest through our behaviors...but i cant say it was simply social networking sites. the positives and negatives couldnt exist, if there were not already blocks to build off of.

I think a social network site is what you make of it.

I know people with 600+ "friends" on their facebook.... I have somewhere around the 50 mark and I have a big family!

I visit site almost everyday, mostly I will just scroll through people's status updates, leave the odd comment to the ones that catch my eye and every now and then leave my own status about something I have thought about or link a new article I want to share.

In many ways I use FB the same way I use this site.

I don't think they are a good thing for society but are not damaging it either... People talk about peadophiles using that site, well I was reading this moring they apparently use some game site or something. That's what peadophiles do, use any tool they can to pry on young children, it's not exclusive to social networking.

End of the day for the most part it is just harmless fun, like anything in life you'll always get some idiot who takes it too seriously.

Just recently closed my Facebook account because honestly, I came to the conclusion that 99% of the people on my friends list are people I'm not even friends with, just people who knew me in high school. If I want to tell my actual friends something, I'll call or text them. I have a Twitter account, but I think I've logged in maybe 1, 2, 3, 0 times? lol seems pointless to me although I know it can be of some use.

This is the only social forum I'm apart of and because of the lifestyle I lead right now, I spend copious amounts of time on here. I'd say it's for the better though considering there honestly isn't much else to do right now in my life and I'd say that I have met some really great people on here.

I'll also say that I've learned a great deal of stuff while being on this forum that I otherwise would probably have never known.

This site has really surprised me, when i was a guest and lurking, some of the threads i viewed did not fit my presumption of what to expect. I can now say i am very much enriched on a knowledge basis.

I think they are fantastic. Social skills are one of the most important aspects of a child's development in my opinion. I feel like by adding a social type of network, it helps children become more comfortable with themselves, there feelings, and others which in turn devlop there personality in a multitude of ways. Although I don't feel that it should replace face to face contact, I feel it should supplement it.

As far as predators are concerned, unfortunately our children will always be exposed to predators. Either in school, church, day care... There is simply no way to expunge any possibility of abuse. I don't feel you should put limitations and boundaries on a child simply based on possibilities but rather on probabilities.

And Martial... Another fantastic thread. Great job.

It's essential for me... I organize my social life using facebook and keep in contact with old friends on it.
If I lose my phone then I don't lose contact with people...
